Relationships, Health and Sex Education (RHSE)

At Thurton CE Primary School, one of our main curriculum aims is to provide a solid foundation to enable children to be confident in leading their lives in a healthy and safe way. We aim that all children develop their knowledge of their wellbeing, health and relationships through a consistent, progressive and inclusive approach.

We believe that:

  • everyone can make informed good decisions, with the support of high quality resources.
  • new content should be presented in a way that is age and developmentally appropriate and sensitive to the needs and religious background of our pupils.
  • children should be provided time to discuss, reflect and make decisions.
  • content should build on prior learning and be reviewed and revisited as the children move through the school.
  • children and staff develop ‘a love to learn’ approach to Relationships and Health education sessions.
  • a ‘togetherness’ culture will be promoted across the school.
  • Collective Worship supplements RHSE development where appropriate.

The key building blocks and information that the children will acquire is embedded within our curriculum and through our Collective Worship. At Thurton CE Primary school we can link this learning to the broader topics being covered each term in each class. However, RHSE can also be taught discreetly if appropriate links cannot be made within the topics.

Throughout the year, the children will learn RHSE through a balance/variety of high quality resources, which include 1decision, Educator Solutions and the PSHE Association.

Most modules of learning are presented to the children as a learning journey with a clearly defined end point. This can often be a choice or decision the children make, which will demonstrate their understanding or promote further discussion.

Curriculum Map and Key Themes

By completing training, teachers are equipped to deliver the curriculum effectively.  Children have the building blocks to grow up healthy, happy, safe, and able to manage the challenges and opportunities of modern Britain.

By selecting and using appropriate materials and resources:

  • children have what they need to support them with their learning.
  • children know what a relationship is, what friendship is, what family means and who can support them.
  • children know how to treat each other with kindness, consideration and respect.
  • children know how to make good decisions about their own health and wellbeing.
  • children know how to recognise issues in themselves or others and potential risks.
  • children know to seek support as early as possible when issues arise.
